I need an answer to this dilemma immediately. The mother of a 9 mo just
called. She went to her doctor today for a vaginal discharge problem, and
much to her shock, she is pregnant. She doesn't know exactly how far along
she is because she and her son were sick when she had her last period, and
she didn't record the dates. However, she is guessing 6-8 wks.
With her previous pregnancy she had to take daily injections (50 mg) of
progesterone, and her doctor wants her to begin the injections tonight. She
has been told that if she takes the progesterone, she must wean immediately,
so she feels torn between the needs of each baby.
What is the effect of this medication at this dosage on her unborn child?
Should she wean because of the medication? Is this dosage one which mimics
the levels of pregnancy? She and her son both enjoy nursing, but she
doesn't want to endanger this baby. If she must wean, must it be done
quickly or can she take a few weeks? If she can continue nursing, I would
expect her milk supply to decrease, so she will probably have to supplement
with abm since her child is under 1 yr.
