I would love the opinions of you in cyberspace. A 12 hour
postpartum woman has a large bruised looking spot on the lower aspect of
her breast. She noticed something funny three days ago. Some tenderness,
no noticable markings but felt something. Two days prior to delivery a
redness appeared, one day prior it turned deep blue with red edges. The
entire area is about 1 1/2 inches in diameter, and approximately round. It
looks like a bruise but mother denies any trauma. It is midway between the
inframammary fold and areola margin. She is small breasted and this area
does not lay against another skin surface. There is pain when the center is
palpated, otherwise not painful. No fever, no other symptoms of of
mastitis. Second baby, breastfed first without problem. This baby was
nursing fine with no pain or problem from this "thing".
Have any of you wise people seen anything like this? Any ideas
besides the obvious: observe for changes, alert for s/s mastitis, nurse to
drain breast.
TIA
