Just to add that we (NCT) visit mothers to (or invite them to visit
us), but that is completely up to the individual counsellor....most
of us *always* do our best to see a mother, fitting it in round all
the other stuff of our working and domestic ives.

Sometimes, mothers are very demanding (most aren't - most are just
lovely!). But every bfc I know has tales of being put under great
pressure or even harsh criticism from mothers. Sometimes, mothers
call late at night and more or less expect a visit (usually, they
don't know we are volunteers, or they are so distressed they don't
think about it). Most of us would not comply (I would never - in a
true emergency there is always someone whose paid job it is to cope,
and when I get a late night call, I tell the mother her options for
this. I don't feel bad about doing this at all.)

Many bfcs - myself included - get the 'train wreck' situations. A
mother may be referred to us (or may refer herself) when several
other people (friends, family, professionals) has had a go at truly
messing up her bf.

I do think, though, that it behoves volunteer organisations to make
sure of some sort of quality control, continued training, and
supervision. All the national bf organisations I know of working in
the UK (inc. LLL) take this very seriously.
