In response to Paula McRae in Louisiana, there are no "hard and fast" rules
regarding allowable colony counts for mother's own milk. We only do periodic
screening to check mother's milk collection technique. We do not use culture
results to make a decision on whether to feed the milk or not.

With regards to the nipple condition of this mother, have you considered
eczema? We had a mother several years ago with similar symptoms - thought it
was yeast. Routine treatment did not help. Asked mom if she had a history of
eczema, and lo and behold! That was it . Sent her to a dermatologist who
confirmed the diagnosis. Treated with topical steroids and had immediate
relief of nipple pain, constant leaking - milk volume also increased
dramatically with treatment.

Hope this helps!
