Hi, all (especially for Lactnetters with herbal knowledge): I've searched
the archives, but although menopausal symptoms in breastfeeding moms have
been discussed, I couldn't find an answer to my particular question. I
have a 50-year-old first time mother who was menopausal for at least a
year before she got pregnant (had been on estrogen replacement for severe
hot flashes). She is 3 months postpartum and has had a variety of
problems including thrush, severe nipple pain due to tongue-tie which took
over 3 weeks to get clipped, and development of excruciating carpal tunnel
syndrome. Now that all these calamities seem to be resolving, she has her
hot flashes back. She also feels totally overwhelmed and alone, and I'm
concerned about PPD in her as well. While I'm working on the emotional
issues with her, I'd like to treat her hot flashes, which are intolerable
for her. I'm concerned about dropping her milk supply with estrogen, and
I'll certainly suggest that she eat tofu, yams, legumes, etc for some
relief. However, I was wondering if anyone has used herbal menopause
remedies in lactating mothers and, if so, which ones seemed to work
without causing breastfeeding problems? TIA, Alicia Dermer,MD, IBCLC.
