A mom contacted me for persistent sore nipples. Her midwife is
treating her and her baby for persistent yeast. When I saw her,
nipples did look more damaged that 'just yeast'. The latch was
shallow and her nipples were creased and blanched after feeding. We
got the latch corrected, and mom is working on that. Taking care of
the vasospasms she is experiencing after weeks of this, etc. In the
process of determining why her nipples were not responding to what the
midwife was using for yeast for mother and baby, a culture was done on
the mother's nipples. Initial results came back with yeast (which is
to be expected) and the final lab results also show Enterobacter
cloacae. Researching the archives does not give me much, and the one
post from Dr. WIght makes me concerned about not only the mother, but
the baby. Also read one about a baby with diaper rash and this is an
issue for the baby too. Which in my non-medical professional mind
says baby likely has this bacteria also and the two of them should be
treated for the infection. And, if this is already in the baby,
weaning from breastfeeding until treatment is complete seems
unnecessary. I am going to suggest the mother have her pediatrician
culture the babies rash. I would think if this were an infection, the
natural yeast remedies are not going to cut it, and that is why she
has been dealing with this for nearly a month already before
contacting me.

Thoughts??

And can you please reply privately as well as to the list.
