Dear LACTNET-friends,
Would like to air a question regarding code-compliancy in (BFHI)hospitals
and free samples not per se within the scope of the code. Our hospital is
aiming to qualify as Baby Friendly next year. Until now we have had baskets
available containing free samples of breast pads and small sachets of
lanolin, which the hospital have received for free from a certain company,
also selling bottles. The company colour is very recognisable so
association is very strong. I believe we sometimes even are using the
same company's bottles (maybe also given for free - not quite sure about
that yet - certainly not acceptable), as these seem to be rather popular
with parents who expressledy wish to use bottles.
The breast pads and the lanolin are not within the scope of code per se,
but we are wondering whether they code-wise are "tainted by association"
being direct advertising of that particular company and we sort of endorse
that company's products by distributing them under our roof...in the
process also the bottles.
What would your good discerning opinion be of this situation? Some of my
colleagues think that we don't have to be so strict - while
others including myself would rather like to avoid any advertising.
Hoping for some thoughts on this. I know there are many code experts
on this list :)
Warm regards
Merete Willis, midwife, IBCLC, Finland
