I am behind on reading e-mails , Please frogive this
combination reply.
To June Nichols: RE/ water supplementation The following
articles may be helpful<Pediatric Alert 9/15/94 "Hyponatremic
Seizures in infants Fed Commercial Bottled Water" and The CDC
MMWR, Sept 9, 1994;43:641-643The CDC concludes that human
milk and infant formula provide infants with sufficient
quantities of water, and "supplemental water generally is not
indicated for healthy infants who are not yet recieving solid
foods (i.e., Breastfed or formula fed), except possibly
during hot weather for formula-fed infants. Physicians and
other health care providers should discourage parents from
using water

(either tap or bottled) as a supplement for infants aged
<6months and should advise parents that children of any age
who have diarrhea and vomiting should be given oral
rehydration solution instead of solute free water'. In the
previous article the infant had been fed"SEVERAL ounces of
bottled water for several days" and developed seizures.
Glucose water is solute free except for sugar.I don't agree
by the way that BF infants with diarrhea need rehydration
solution but I think this advice has been updated.
To Judy Sather: RE/ working and BreastfeedingThe magazine
HUMAN RECOURCES 21, November 7,2002 pg. 5 Has an
article "Benefits Update" That discusses setting up a
lactation room and states "Encouraging working mothers to
breastfeed can actually save your company money".Another
resource is the US Breastfeeding Committee "Workplace
Breastfeeding Support"@ www.usbreastfeeding.org.
RE/ The infant having cardiac surgery: I wonder if pointing
out that test weights after Breastfeeding could be more
accurate than measured feeds from a bottle. Babies frequently
dribble some milk, thats why moms use bibs. I can't put my
finger on the JHL magazine by Paula Meier but she discussed
dribbling with cup feeds ,it applys to bottles too.
To Dawn Kersula RE/ The pregnant woman with throbbing and
burning. I once had a patient with accessory nipples with
those symptoms. In pregnancy warmth helped (don't know why)
ice helped after
