It would be helpful for her to contact the lactation
consultant/specialist/nurse (if they have someone in charge of that) at the hospital and make an
appointment with that person to discuss her wishes for a sucessful delivery. Also
she should do the same with her OB and her Ped. She may want to take a pump to
the hospital with her so if the baby doesn't nurse immediately, she can pump
a little colostrum and give to the baby. Remind her that the colostrum comes
in tiny amounts so if she only wets the flange of the pump, she can use a
clean finger to wipe off the colostrum and let the baby lick or suck it off her
finger. Remnd her also of the influence of childbirth medications on the baby's
alertness and ability to nurse. It would also be helpful for her to write a
birth plan, and have a doula or birth attendant on hand to help follow the
birth plan and her desires.
