Hi,
I have been following the post about competent LC's and find this post so
timely.
I am in private practice. I see many mothers after their discharge from the
hospital. I find it very frustrating when some of the LC's at a local hospital are
not practicing evidence-based care. These IBCLC's were post partum nurses
that went to a week long class and then sat for their exam.
Now when the moms come to me they have been turned off by what an IBCLC
told them to do. No latch- set up with a breastpump- not alot of colostrum-
supplement with 2 oz of formula at 36 hours of age!!!! A frustratating scenerio
from this week, but a constant theme.
So I spend alot of time doing damage control. I can say I am frustrated that
they call themselves IBCLC's as it makes my IBCLC credentials seem less
important.
So I second the need for something to be done for our profession.
Thanks for letting me vent.
Molly Shakar RN, IBCLC
