The appendix of this article (quoted in Marsha Walker's article about sore nipples) -

has a recipe for peppermint gel. Three local compounding pharmacies are able to compound for less than $15 US and the, very few, moms that I've recommended it to and who have tried it found it effective.  The instructions are to apply it after a feed and wash it off before the next feed.
