Hang in there! I too am at a hospital and my position was 1/2 LC & 1/2
staffing, but ended up staffing where ever it was the most busy and taking
care of the lactation issues with the time I had left, until July of this year
(when I was about to turn in my notice) We only deliver about 1800 a year.
My Nurse manager has always been supportive, but had to get the approval
from above to get the full time position approved... but with a few changes in
upper management it finally happened!!! (I am officially the childbirth ed
coordinator also, but I can juggle that most of the time).

I always point out the tounge tied babies to the docs. I tell them I am very
sensitive to finding this, because all 5 of my own had to have their frenulem
clipped! There are a few who have rolled their eyes at me and told me that
they don't clip tongues, that "has to be done by an ENT" (ha!) & it will take
about 6 weeks to get an apt with one. However, I have scoped out which of
our FP's & Peds will clip, and occasionally I have called the ENT clinic directly
and sent the parents with baby in arms for the ENT to evaluate & clip straight
from discharge from the hospital. So far I have not gotten yelled at, (& if I
did, my manager would have the dr cornered so fast that he or she would not
know what hit them!) Overall I have developed a good relationship with the
drs and get a good number of referrals to see outpts from them.

What you might do is find an article that has a picture of a tied tongue and
just give that to the parents to compare with their baby's.

Good Luck!

Pam
