The Elite is considered a hospital grade pump. It is sufficient for many 
moms, but some mothers respond better to the Lact-e or SMB, which have a 
metal piston and a slightly longer peak to the suction curve (and a very 
smooth suction curve).

Another way to improve the suction curve of the Elite is to change the 
piston if it's been on there awhile. It's easy to do, and Ameda supplies 
them as necessary to rental depots and hospitals. I'm sure the local 
Ameda rep would give Pat one to help her daughter change (it's a cinch, 
really).

You are right that choice of pump is individual. I've had a few moms 
find the Elite more comfortable and effective than a Lact-e in a side by 
side test in my office, but most moms of premies prefer and do better 
with the Lact-e.

There's a place for most of the products on the market, because mom's 
needs are individual. That's why it's good for us to know about all of 
them (from real life or colleagues, not the reps necessarily) so we can 
advise and assist mothers for whom their first choice is not working.
