Dear Lactnetters

The following is a question on behalf of the mother of a fourteen month old
boy with 'CHARGE' syndrome. He is currently hospitalised with hypo- (not
hyper) natremia, (low sodium). His mum is being pushed to wean and totally
formula feed. Do any of you who are familiar with CHARGE may know of
particular benefits to continued breastfeeding in these children? In my
brief research of it - there would appear to be many compelling advantages
to maintaining both the musculo skeletal action of breastfeeding, as well as
the immunological benefits.

If any of you wise women have specific experience or information which may
be helpful to this mother in making her case to continue to breastfeed she
would be most grateful. Here is the message from the questioner:

"I just talked to my friend Jo & she is very happy for you to post a
question to lactnet.

They ended up testing her breastmilk for sodium & it came back with
quite high levels - 22.99mg per 100ml, so that obviously wasn't the
problem. Nevertheless, they are left with the problem that baby's levels
are going too low sometimes (they are having to give sodium supplements)
& are trying to figure out why. The theory so far is that it's because
he was exclusively bfed for 12 months & that the levels he is getting
just aren't sufficient for his requirements any more. "

Many thanks
