There are many vivid and wonderful descriptions of breastfeeding and
pumping, with all the joys and traumas of a first-time mother's
experiences, in Anne Lamott's 1993 book, "Operating Instructions: A Journal
of My Son's First Year." Not everyone will like this very uninhibited
book, and it will undoubtaby offend some. But she is a very skilled
writer, and makes all the details come alive. The book is available in
paperback. Nonfiction, but reads like a novel.
