behavior - the baby periodically flattens the nipple against his palate in an

This is sort of mixing posts with the Hungry ones, but since they seem to fit:
Bottlfeeding can be paced, and baby can initiate if parents are told how
important this is, how respectful it is. Sometimes I think that when families
learn that there really are things a person needs to know to safely and
respectfully bottlfeed, it helps them see how bottlfeeding really isn't the norm, and it
does take work. I sometimes liken it to "feed or drown" in terms of the baby
who "loves his bottle", who guzzles, etc. And the baby who "sleeps so well"
after a bottlefeed may just be exhausted or stuffed, like a person after
Thanksgiving dinner. No one wants to eat that way all the time, and most parents who
know Thanksgiving have seen how the relatives can go into a stupor after
dinner. Sometimes when parents are cued into their babies gasping, wide-eyedness,
speed-feeds, lack of real choice without baby initiation and respectful and
responsive pacing, they don't see bottlfeeding as their "out", away from that
hard work of breastfeeding. It's all work, it's all learning on the way to
achieveing the norm, bottles are tools on the way to normal feeding.
Judy LeVan Fram, way over the limit for posts today! :)
