Hi, Pat: I, too, have been using the hamburger analogy for latch-on for
many years now, but I TALK about the hamburger and use a cloth breast model
to DEMONSTRATE as I am talking. The breast I use is (or was, it's 20 years
old) from Childbirth Graphics and pre-dates the breasts that are currently
available specifically for breastfeeding teaching. My breast is intended
as a breast-self exam teaching tool - it has "lumps" (not visible) in
different areas of the breast, including the nipple itself. The lump in
the nipple helps the nipple maintain its shape better. So, as I ask the
mother to think about what she does when she eats a hamburger, I
demonstrate, using the breast. I think it helps her to visualize what the
baby is actually doing on the breast. Demonstrating/teaching in this
manner, almost always results in an AHA! moment for the parents.
