I personally think that it is all related to separation of mother and baby.
As someone else mentioned whether it is hospital staff or procedures or
family at home passing baby around (guilty of this myself :-(    Babies
belong ON mom, not nearby in a crib or in someone else's arms!   And not
with tons of clothes, blankets etc between them!  Babies probably depend on
smell and instinct in the newborn phase.  They rapidly learn all the rest of
what we impose on them.  And western culture pushes for mother/baby
separation. ( This should lead to a good discussion!  :-) Pat in SNJ
