Kika,
I would start w/ whatever national goals there may be for increasing bf
initiation and duration and state that the goals are not being met. Then I
would say the best way to meet the goals is to follow the 10 steps. Just
going thru the 10 steps will cover most all bf management. As you go thru
the steps you could cover positions and latch, effective fdg vs ineffective
fdg, and a little about preemies (teach mothers to maintain lactation if
separated), and also jaundice and meds (no supps unless medically
necessary). If you have extra time open it for question and answer because
they will have lots of questions. Predictably, you will feel the need to
expound on some topics which you will not have time for (like jaundice,
medications, premies, near term infants, slow gaining etc etc) so you may
want to have a good ref. book to recommend or some good journal articles to
point them too. You could also make notes of what topics they seem
interested or need to know more about and offer to do further 1 hr talks or
grand rounds on a topic. Good luck. There is no way you can teach them
everything that YOU know - that would take years! Just start the process,
you will make a difference.
