I've been doing some extensive "poking around" in the transitional feeding
arena, looking at the wide variety of amounts, types of foods, etc.
Basically driving myself crazy <g>. On one of the better-known abm sites,
the breastfeeding info hit me in the stomach. Basically, it states that
breastmilk supplies *most* of what babies need. The "most" is asterisked
and vitamin D supplementation is recommended by the AAP when you follow the
asterisk. Of course, abm provides complete nutrition if that's your choice
of feeding (tongue firmly planted in cheek). The subtle implication is that
breastmilk is inadequate and that is troubling me this week. The abm ads
would always say, "breastmilk is best BUT...". Now breastmilk is not the
gold standard?

The above vitamin D scenario coupled with the references suggesting some
link between early vitamin supplementation and asthma is interesting. What
I immediately think is that if a mother chooses to breastfeed but gives
vitamin D supplements early on (and most likely just gives a multi-vitamin)
does that set up her baby for increased risk of asthma? Is the risk the
same as if she simply chose to use abm? Just musing...but interested in
your thoughts. Anyone needing a dissertation topic <g>?

Nursling Gavin had his vitamin D today...outside in the sunshine <g>
