This topic is becoming more relevant as the number of bariatric surgeries increase. Fertility improves with weight loss therefore pregnancies may occur sooner than the recommended time periods which allows for the stabilization of the diet. There is little to no information on the need for additional supplementation during breastfeeding. There is information on maternal deficiencies of Vitamin B 12 which can cause failure to thrive, developmental delays and megaloblastic anemia in breastfed infants and is one of the most common deficiencies seen post the Roux-en-Y procedure.
One thing I am seeing is the stoppage of recommended vitamin supplementation due to intolerance (nausea, vomiting, ect) during the pregnancy and some very anemic Moms. It is important that these Moms receive good follow-up to assure that all recommended supplementations are being taken especially for those with recent bariatric surgeries.
