Casey Clubb posted her reflections and concerns about some of the content of
this article, and her points are well taken.

What I appreciated most about the article was the mentions of all the
formula company trinkets used by the people dispensing (usually bad or
unsupportive) advice to the author.

While I as a breastfeeding specialist midwife would indeed be concerned if I
saw a baby who wasn't growing as expected and who only seemed to swallow on
every fifth 'suck', I would be equally concerned if a mother were focusing
on things like the suck/swallow ratio of her healthy baby, or the number of
minutes on each side and the number of hours between feeds rather than
enjoying her/him and responding to the baby's cues. I guess I perceived
this mother's description of her LC's comment differently too. In the
context of the article, it felt to me as if the LC knew what to say to the
mother to get her to trust herself and stop leaning on formula, because the
overwhelming message in the article *as I read it* was how undermining all
the formula influence was to this woman.
