I feel the need to mention that if one encounters a mother who has been
counseled and supported by a lay volunteer, one must not assume that the
volunteer is not *also* an IBCLC. In her volunteer capacity, she would
probably not ever mention her IBCLC status (if she is an LLLL, she can't
refer to herself and then be paid for her time) - but she could indeed
dispense "all kinds of BF help" including the more technical things like suck
assessment and help with complex breastfeeding aids. In my immediate area,
there are 16 LLL Leaders, SIX of whom are also IBCLC. The mothers whom these
IBCLCs help through LLL meetings and telephone calls may never know that they
were given "all kinds of BF help" from someone who has that additional
education, training, and certification.

Lisa Jones, LLLL in Wellington FL
