Just had a question about breastmilk storage in the NICU. Has anyone heard about a policy requiring that EBM for very low birth weight babies (under 1500 gm at birth) needing to be frozen and rethawed before giving to infant in order to kill the cytomegalovirus? Any current research about this?

If infant is unable to breastfeed, what is your institutions policy about how soon nurses must help the mother initiate pumping?

Does anyone have a good guide for current pumping recommendations, or sample hospital policy that meets current guidelines?

Thank you,

Tricia Shamblin, RN, IBCLC
