Pat,
 
A LC/Nutritionist I know told me years ago that she  never suggests 
banana's as first food for infant's due to this possible latex  allergy.  Below is 
one resource about fruit-latex allergies and why there  is a connection.  I 
don't know what the outcome would be for this child but  I wonder if he was 
exposed to latex since birth due to pacifers or bottle  nipples with latex.
