I would like to 2nd what Laurie said about breastfeeding education having a
natural home in the field of MPH education. I just completed both my MPH and
my CHES ( certified health education specialist) and the am also a Certified
Lactation Educator. My job entails including breastfeeding into many
different educational approaches and topics ( preparedness, women's health,
biology classes for teens, etc) . I teach breastfeeding classes too, but
since lactation is my specialty, I spend more time about how to teach
breastfeeding in other settings. Some in my MPH cohort were more
interested in HIV/AIDS, or diabetes or infectious diseases, and my interest
in breastfeeding and fell in very nicely with the coursework and my other
certifications. My university ( Florida International ) does not have an
MPH/MCH track as some other do, but I was encouraged by the interim dean (
an RD and former WIC nutritionist) to let breastfeeding and MCH be the focus
of all my research areas and it worked wonderfully.

So (now I have lost the original thread) which lamented the distribution of
LC's doing the medical model/ secondary care. That may be true, but please
know that many other specialties and certifications also approach
breastfeeding, especially from the educational standpoint, and it is by all
means a huge public health issue as well and duly covered by the public
health practioners all over the world!
