Heparin is not absorbed through the digestive tract. The concentration of
heparin in breastmilk is unaffected by exogenous heparin given to the
mother. Heparin is produced by the body all the time, but is given in extra
amounts to women experiencing gynecologic surgery, especially caesarean
section, because of the increased risk of blood clots post partum, which can
pose life-threatening complications to new mothers.

The reason they have to get the heparin injected is that there is no other
way to make sure it gets into their bloodstream. Taking it by mouth is
worthless because heparin IS DESTROYED IN THE GI TRACT (yes I am shouting
now).

Now get those babies back on the breast!
Sternly,

Norway
where all women undergoing CS receive low molecular weight heparin for at
least several days, and babies are breastfed
