Dear Lee Ann,

The Florida Lactation Consultant Association had a panel entitled MAPS
(middle-aged primips) at their conference in 1996. I, too had a hard time
with these moms until then (even though I pretty much fit the description!)

These moms have different expectations from younger moms. The expect an easy
pregnancy, easy delivery, early contact, restful recovery and sleep. They
also expect a gerber baby. They usually come from a 2 income family, have
maternity leave. They are usually college graduates, and need "recipes" to
help them cope with changes in their lives.

Focus on the behavior of the patient. Teach that mom and baby form a co-
dependent relationship. (these moms are dependent on baby for feelings of
achievement). Teach in a logical manner, provide lots of literature, and
Praise, Praise, Praise. Encourage lots of touching.

Allow patient to rest, medicate for pain (reassuring that this is OK), offer
opportunities to ventilate, maintain open communication with family members
and sig. others.

(if anyone wants the bib, I'll e-mail it to you)

post)
