Recent posts on latching prompt me to share this thought.
I encourage moms to tickle only baby's upper lip when coaxing baby
to gape.  In my opinion it probably works tickling the lower one,
but what I often see is that when mom's nipple is tickling the lower
lip and baby opens wide, by the time mom aims her nipple upward
again, baby may have closed his mouth.  Therefore, if the tickling
is limited to the upper lip, then the nipple is already aimed well
for an asymetric latch and mom has a chance to get baby on before
he/she closes his mouth.
