I too have worn contacts for the last twenty years, both gas permeable,
(hard), and now soft lenses. Yes, the eyes do change during pregnancy,
and lactation, though they usually change almost completely back to
pre-pregnancy status within the first 6 weeks postpartum, according to
my optometrist and opthalmologist. Hard contacts are more difficult to
wear through pregnancy, and for the first couple of months postpartum,
as they have very little give. Soft contacts more easily conform to the
changing shape of the eye, and are more tolerable throughout pregnancy.
Personally, I would be a bit concerned about wearing just one contact.
Some alternative health care specialists warn that this confuses the
brain, and will further weaken the eyes. I don't know what the source
is for this info, I've just had it told to me by various alternative hc
professionals in the past. However, I also know that before the advent
of bifocal contacts, this is what many eye care parctitioners had their
patients do if they needed bifocals. Sometimes they even prescribed
contacts of two different strengths.

Anyway, I'd ask the doctor what his sources are. However, I think I'd
be looking for a new eye doc too. You see, I don't mess with my
eyes...I only have one that functions, and almost lost that one 13 years
ago. My oldest is 11, and I wore contacts throughout all of my
pregnancies, even had script changes 6 weeks postpartum. It can be
done.
