I have been off Lactnet for awhile and decided to return.

Anyone out there with expertise on handling feeding issues with babies that
have a short gut? I was asked to help this mom with a pump as she has to
return her Symphony pump on loan. Baby is being discharged from the
hospital on continuous G-tube feed of Elecare and only allowed to breastfeed
2-3 times/day. On just breastmilk baby was stooling out and losing
nutrients so they had to cut back on the breastmilk. I was told that baby
has the potential to increase the amount of breastmilk but not at this
time. Mom is also pumping 6 times/day to help keep up her supply but is
freezing it since she cannot give it to the baby. Baby was born at 24 weeks
and is now 2 months corrected age (born in July). With breastmilk having
such healing properties, shouldn't baby be taking breastmilk? Was baby
getting too much milk high in lactose that it could have caused issues with
absorption? Wouldn't it be possible for mom to give more hindmilk, or even
obtain donor milk that has a higher caloric content? Can anyone shed any
light on this? In the archives, someone mentioned Paula Meier's work- can
someone tell me where I can find this.

Thanks,
Esther Gillett
