Another reason for all the caries bacteria (strep mutans) in mom's mouth
is our diet high in processed carbohydrates. If we did not eat all
those sugars and starches, the strep mutans would have nothing to live
off of.

Cereal is sooo one of my pet peeves. The reason that baby cereal became
entrenched in our society was to provide iron to babies fed cow milk
from a very young age. Breastfed babies get all the iron they need from
mom, IF THE BREASTFEEDING IS EXCLUSIVE. Pisacone (in a very well
designed study using exclusively breastfed infants in Italy) found that
no infant who started solids at 7 mos of age or later developed anemia,
whereas 1/3 of those who started solids at 5.5 to 6.5 months of age
did. Our early solids and cow milk based feeding started the anemia
epidemic that early iron fortified cereals were designed to treat. If
one reads just the abstracts of the studies, or the discussion, the
authors usually tow the party line. iron is good, we need to give iron.
If one reads the entire study, iron is not needed for fully breastfed
infants, unless they were born very preterm.
