Dear Lactnet Friends:

First of all, breastfeeding is one of many strategies that have a
cumulative effect in reducing or preventing obesity. If breastfed children
are fed edible food-like substances (aka process foods) once they wean, and
have hours of screen time instead of playing outside....they will be fat.

Secondly, there is a lovely table in this new study from JAMA. Table 1:
"Baseline and Follow-up Characteristics." Nearly half the intervention
group is in the "Exclusive < 3 months" group. (93% were in the control
group, so clearly the intervention makes a difference.)

In layman's terms, this means that a whole lot of babies were not breastfed
according to recommended guidelines. So how can one expect a maximal
benefit?

I've only just started looking at this study...we all should be reading it
thoroughly, as our competitors will have a field day unless we are informed.

warmly,
