To all,

A fellow lactnetter has pointed out to me that my post on vicoden may
have given a false impression of things that Dr. Jack has said concerning
breastmilk containing potentially addictive substances. When I re-read
my post, I saw that she was correct - many apologies to Dr. Newman.
Rereading my notes on this subject, I see that the more correct stating
(of my notes) was that the small amount of drug in the breastmilk would
not pose a risk to the infant who was already being slowly detoxed by IV
infusions of the same drug (the drug in my notes was morphine). There
was another post, by someone else, in reference to moms weaning off off
methadone where it was stated that their breastfeeding babies would,
because of the breastmilk, be slowly weaned at the same time and that
this was a better method. However, it was not stated whether the babies
were receiving breastmilk in addition to other drug therapy in order to
prevent withdrawal syndrome (another study in my notes states that there
is insufficient methadone in breastmilk to prevent withdrawal symptoms in
most babies of addicted moms).

Now that I have pretty thoroughly botched up my own response, someone
much more knowledgable than me will hopefully post a much better answer.
Reading and posting at 5am is probably not such a good idea. Again, my
sincerest apologies to Jack Newman - being misquoted is not a good thing,
especially in front of so many folks.

Mea culpa
