I appreciate Kate's comments on telling moms not to use soap on
their nipples.  I don't think I'd go so far as to say ignore that
advice.  My concern is that some women think they have to scrub them
clean.  That may set her up for some tenderness if she rubs off the
outer layer of skin cells that should sluff off naturally.  Also, it
doesn't allow the Montgomery gland secretions to stay there to help
make the tissue supple and ready to stretch as it will be doing in
baby's mouth.
What I do say is that moms don't have to wash their nipples with
soap.  Sinply rinse them with water and don't get concerned if some
soap runs over or splashes on them, but don't deliberately wash them
with soap (which is often done by rubbing with a washcloth).
