In response to Luann's question about laxative use in a breastfeeding mother,
one of my clients recently had a premature infant(about 31 weeks at birth)
who developed a diarrhea at about a week of age, and his mother had been
taking laxatives, since she had been on prolonged bedrest prior to his birth,
and she was very constipated after giving birth. Initially they tried giving
him milk pumped prior to the laxative ingestion, but his diarrhes persisted.
He was taken off breastmilk(put on an elemental formula) and not returned
until his stools were normal, about 6 or 7 days. He returned to his mother's
milk and at 3+ weeks he is growing like a weed, and has had no further
problems.
I think it is difficult to identify laxatives in the mother's milk, but some
infants have experienced problems, such as this one.
