My heart sinks when I read of mothers and babies "allowed" to be
together, whether in an OR, recovery room or DR. I am not dismissing
Cindy's joy for this family or the potential for other families--she
has every right to be elated. But, I consider it a tragedy that this is
something we are still surprised, excited and hopeful about. I agree
with Jack and Pam--all families deserve the same care and respect. We
should assume that all mothers need to hold their babies and all babies
need to be held--skin-to-skin. When we divide breastfeeding babies and
babies who are not bf from the moment of birth, we do much harm to
everyone. I think it contributes to making bf'ing more difficult, b/c
bf'ing then requires so much more--more attention, more contact, more
rule-bending, more teaching, more time--whatever it is. Shouldn't all
policies that impact babies assume the true nature of the human infant
as the guiding principle?
