This information was included as part of the Principals of Lactation Management course put on by the Texas Department of Health. Average hospital stay for breastfed premature infants was 73 dyas, average for formula-fed babies was 88 days.

The reference you are looking for may be:
Shulman, Lau. Pediatrics. 1999; 103(6): 1150-1157

Hope this helps!

>>>I am looking for a reference regarding discharge time of NICU babies, breastfed vs. formula-fed? Is there any data that suggests that breastfed babies are discharged earlier than formula-fed babies from the NICU setting? Thanks, Maureen Allen, NICU Lactation Consultant, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston, MA<<<
