I receive Lactnet posts in digest form, so if this has already been posted, my apologies. The UNICEF report focusing on child nutrition is out today. A few quotes are below with a link to one of the written reports for those of you who may be interested. I've not had time to read everything at the UNICEF site, so can't comment objectively about the overall support or accuracy of information for breastfeeding.

Rebecca DeYoung Daniels, MBA, RD, LD, IBCLC. RLC

>>It also stresses a special focus on the first two years of life - a critical window of opportunity to safeguard children's future potential. Young bodies and brains may never recover from the effects of poor nutrition during this development stage. A healthy, well nourished pregnancy is an essential first step. And promoting exclusive breastfeeding is the most powerful tool to ensure a child thrives through infancy.<<

And another quote...

>>According to the UNICEF report card, only one in three children is breast-fed in the first six months of life, meaning they are deprived of crucial nutrients that stimulate their immune systems and protect them from respiratory infections.

Veneman and Catherine Bertini, chair of the UN Standing Committee on Nutrition, who helped unveil the report, said undernutrition must be combatted by a host of measures: sanitation, children's education, security, and awareness among adults, for example.

"The mother has to have enough food in order to produce enough milk in order to breast feed, but she has to know that she should breast feed," Bertini said. "That's an education issue."<<
