Giving credit where it's due, the idea of rheoscopic fluid exhibits
originated in the 1960's with Paul Matisse, a Massachusetts artist.
Paul called his devices kalliroscopes and went on to found
Kalliroscope Company. I am pretty sure that the first of his devices
to appear in a museum was at the Museum of Science, Boston, about 30
years ago, where he contributed two devices to an exhibit on fluid
dynamics. Glad to see that the Museum still uses his fluids. His
work is beautiful and well worth considering if you are in a position
to buy a device rather than build your own.
