Wow, thanks Bill Schmitt. I guess you are referring to this 2002 article on
my website: http://www.interactives.co.uk/hearts_exploratory.htm

Explanatory or exploratory: we need both, yet we can't have 100% of both
because more of one leaves less room for the other. I believe this is the
central creative tension for all designers of interactive science exhibits.
To keep it in view during concept-development discussions, I came up with my
'Slider Model'. Hopefully others might also find it useful:
http://www.interactives.co.uk/hearts_exploration_explanation.htm

I've nothing personal against explainers. My long-suffering family will tell
you that I'm the world's most compulsive, unstoppable explainer. So I'm
qualified to observe that over-eager explainers can crush explorers.

Promoting public engagement with science
through a contagious delight in phenomena

Give people facts and you feed their minds for an hour.
Awaken curiosity and they feed their own minds for a lifetime.

Get Ian to send you his article on "Exploratory" exhibits. It is great and
really expands on his information below that I really agree with. I have
used that article with grandparents to help remind them of how much their
natural interaction and ability to encourage exploration with kids is so
important.
