ISEN-ASTC-L is a service of the Association of Science-Technology Centers
Incorporated, a worldwide network of science museums and related institutions.
*****************************************************************************

Dear Association of Science and Technology Centers,

I am a teacher with the CHESPAX environmental education program of the
Calvert County Public Schools in Maryland. This summer I will have the
opportunity to serve as a PolarTREC teacher through a National Science
Foundation sponsored project in Alaska. PolarTREC partners teachers with
researchers who are conducting studies of the environment and culture in the
polar regions of the world. My particular project will be a seabird
telemetry study to investigate the impact of climate change on the feeding
strategies and nesting success of birds in the Pribilof Islands in the Bering
Sea. I will be working with a team of scientists from Oregon State
University on this exciting project.

I will be posting daily journal entries as well as some video and podcasts
and will be conducting a live webinar at some point during this experience.
Interested teachers and students can also post questions to me or to the
scientists about the work that is taking place, before during and after my
expedition.

I thought that perhaps this might be a project of interest to some of the
students or teachers affiliated with the ISEN-ASTC. If anyone will be
running summer science programs for students, this could be an interesting
way to connect to some on-going research In addition to my project (which
will take place July 15-August 15), other teachers from my cohort group will
be conducting studies of polar bears, astrophysics, and any number of
exciting topics. Many of these other projects will be taking place during
the school year and classes can follow along on the expedition from their
classrooms.
