ISEN-ASTC-L is a service of the Association of Science-Technology Centers
Incorporated, a worldwide network of science museums and related institutions.
*****************************************************************************

Greetings! We wanted to share this announcement with you:

The Lunar and Planetary Institute is hosting a FREE NASA-supported
workshop, Explore! Hero Moon. Librarians; museum, science center,
planetarium, and observatory staff; and park naturalists who work with
8-13-year-olds in out-of-school environments in Colorado and Wyoming are
invited to attend! The two-day training will be held in Fort Collins,
Colorado on September 2-3, 2010.

Explore! Hero Moon will acquaint participants with NASA's investigations
into the ongoing saga that has shaped our Moon. Scientists and educators
from the NASA Lunar Science Institute and the Lunar and Planetary
Institute will share space science information, resources, hands-on
activities, and demonstrations. In addition to this workshop, future
trainings will be offered via webcasts beginning this fall and as
workshops in additional states through 2013. Stay tuned for
opportunities near you!

A $150 stipend is available for 30 participants. A stipend request form
will be emailed to participants on a first-come-first-accepted basis.
Space is limited! Register by July 30, 2010 at
http://www.lpi.usra.edu/education/explore/lib_workshops/elw201002/regist
ration/index.cfm .

The workshop will begin at 9:00 a.m. on September 2 and continue until 5
p.m. on September 3. Light breakfasts, lunches, and afternoon snacks
will be provided. Hotel suggestions, logistical information, and a
tentative agenda will be supplied to registrants; participants are
responsible for travel, housing, and dinner costs and arrangements.

During the workshop, participants will:

* Learn about our Moon's long and turbulent history

* Consider what our cultural stories, view of the sky, length of
day, seasons, and tides would be like if the Moon didn't exist

* Meet NASA researchers involved in lunar science and
exploration

* Undertake hands-on activities designed specifically for
children ages 8 to 13

* Form partnerships with other community institutions to
coordinate a celebration of the Moon with Explore! activities

* Receive science education materials, e.g., activity plans,
science presentations, and resources like NASA educational posters,
website links, etc.

* Explore ideas for presenting space science programs to young
audiences and to other colleagues

* Network with colleagues in Colorado and Wyoming

* Become part of the growing Explore! community of librarians
and after-school providers, which is 500+ strong

* Be served breakfast and lunch and lots of chocolate!

Learn more about our six additional Explore! space science topics
(Explore! Jupiter's Family Secrets, Ice Worlds!, Mars: Inside and Out!,
Health in Space, To the Moon and Beyond!, and Beyond Earth) at our
website, http://www.lpi.usra.edu/explore . Each of these topics offers
complementary hands-on activities and resources. Visit our active online
community through the website's discussion boards.
