Hi All,

Piggy-backing off of what Erich said, don't discount a "Universal
design" approach. When thinking of making your exhibits more accessible
(guides, symbols, audio components, etc.), you are not only catering to
guests with physical/developmental challenges, but you are catering to
different learning styles among the general public, too. By gaining ADA
compliance, you could actually be creating a richer educational
experience for all of your guests!

All -
The Accessible Practices section of the ASTC Resource Center contains a
wealth of information on legal obligations of museums, and pointers on
inclusive and accessible design:
http://astc.org/resource/access/index.htm/

Some of the particulars of ADA have changed since this section was put
together, but it covers the basics and provides an excellent foundation
for continued research.

So far, I'm not aware of any ADA-related requirements to provide
accessibility to people with developmental and/or mental
differences/challenges/disabilities as opposed to physical challenges.
Even the Title Three laws that relate to clarity in communication are
really about communicating effectively with people who are blind, deaf,
or in some cases non-English speakers - and don't seem to relate to
simple language, etc. But I'm researching the subject! If you hear of
or know anything about it, please do let me know.
