Pittsburgh's original Buhl Planetarium and Institute of Popular Science wss probably one of the earliest institutions to allow the public to try a bed-of-nails, which was installed as part of Buhl's Discovery Lab program in the mid-1980s. The bed-of-nails was kept in the Discovery Lab and visitors could try it whenever the Discovery Lab was staffed by a Floor Aide or Volunteer, who had been trained in the proper use of the bed-of-nails.

BTW, a Buhl Planetarium Observatory Volunteer, John D. Weinhold, used a bed-of-nails in his own, completely separate from Buhl, carnival act:
