ISEN-ASTC-L is a service of the Association of Science-Technology Centers

We use Physan 20 for its germicidal properties in water and a copper
ion generator. We also use automatic systems to replace the water
several times a day and completely drain at night. Our feeling about
chlorine, bromine and ozone are that they would be fine approaches if
properly monitored and maintained but that typically doesn't happen in
a museum exhibit. Also, if you are going to use chlorine (and to a
lesser extent bromine) you need to consider its long term effect on
all your O-rings, shaft seals, etc.
