Great! I confidently predict that this will be a real winner. Maybe the
tight budget and portability requirements have helped to keep the emphasis
on direct exploration of phenomena and not merely on impressive-looking
hardware.
I have produced a couple of extremely simple shadow exhibits with a compact
light-source about a metre away from a metre-square back-projection screen.
One of the questions on the label asked, "How can you make the shadow of
your hand get bigger?" Most children initially moved their hand towards the
screen instead of towards the light-source.
To form the sharpest possible shadows, I mounted a low-voltage 'capsule'
halogen lamp inside a glss-fronted metal box with a matt-black background
behind the lamp.
Teachers were sometimes heard scolding children for making shadows of rude
finger-gestures. "No, miss. Honestly, it was meant to be a rabbit!"
Promoting public engagement with science
through a contagious delight in phenomena
