I had a popular activity table for teens once, using nothing but a pile of paper from the recycle bins and various books to investigate. I rotated the subjects of the books. Paper airplanes and origami were popular.

we have a counter where we do science activities, but when we're short-staffed we try to have simple activities on the counter that visitors can figure out themselves. I'm looking for new ideas. They need to be a)simple and self-explanatory b) free of scissors, markers, crayons or other things with which our visitors could damage the building or themselves c)cheap and easily restockable (since visitors will take anything that's not nailed down)

successful stuff in the past:
building towers with cups
making shapes with pencils
using cardboard tubes to listen to various sounds

thanks very much for all your fabulous ideas! (see? I know they'll be fabulous)
