Sounds like the answer goes beyond flooring selection. But...

I hate to miss an opportunity to put in a plug for linoleum. It's made now
by a company called Forbo in the Netherlands. It's an all-natural,
solvent-free, very durable, resilient sheet product that can be laid down in
colorful patterns. I don't know which, if any, science centers have used it.
But I'd love to see it used more. The technical specs are on the website.
