A recent study in the PNAS (or Post Nature And Science journal) suggests that the greatest benefits from green technologies might be better directed to geographic areas of greatest populations and oldest most polluting infrastructure. The three factors that determine the benefits of offsetting green energy: population density, energy source being replaced, and environmental efficiencies.
Not all energy is created equal.
How this plays into our social equation is a broader discussion.
The thing that makes fossil fuels so great is that they can be readily mined or tapped in one locale and transported to another efficiently; with "universal access" and "portability. That doesn't happen with solar, or wind.
